Battle Ground

A single, oversized issue from 1955, Battle Ground launched Streamline's war-comics line with a grim, ground-level focus on a single infantry squad in World War II. Gene Colan's moody, shadow-drenched artwork gave the book an unusually cinematic and somber tone for the era, setting it apart from more jingoistic contemporaries. Though it never continued past this debut, Battle Ground remains a striking artifact of mid-1950s war comics, showcasing Colan's early mastery of atmospheric storytelling.
