Batman: Masque

In this 1997 one-shot from DC, writer/artist Mike Grell reimagines the Batman mythos through the lens of a classic opera. Set in a Gothic, alternate-world Gotham, the story casts the Dark Knight as a masked phantom haunting the shadows of a grand theater. Grell's lush, painted artwork and moody narrative make this a singular, atmospheric exploration of the character's tragic romance.
