From 1997 onward, Green Man Press published Ballads, a single-issue comic that marries Appalachian folklore with hauntingly lyrical storytelling. Writer Sharyn McCrumb and artist Charles Vess adapt traditional ballads into a visual narrative, blending McCrumb’s keen sense of regional voice with Vess’s ethereal, folk-inflected linework.
