About the series
In the early 2000s, DC Comics published Automatic Kafka, a nine-issue series by writer Joe Casey and artist Ashley Wood. This gritty, visually distinctive story follows a disgraced journalist who, after a brutal encounter, is transformed into a powerful, cybernetically enhanced being and becomes entangled in a shadowy world of corporate corruption and super-powered violence. Wood's atmospheric, painted artwork gives the series a raw, almost fever-dream quality, setting it apart from more conventional superhero fare. Automatic Kafka stands as a bold, short-lived experiment in blending noir sensibilities with sci-fi body horror, showcasing Casey and Wood's willingness to push the boundaries of the DC Universe.
