About the series
In a hyper-corporate, media-saturated future America, Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg! (1983–1988, First Comics) follows Reuben Flagg, a former TV star turned law enforcement agent in a Chicago ruled by a private police force. Chaykin’s kinetic, design-heavy art and satirical, no-holds-barred writing—later joined by Mike Gold and J. M. DeMatteis, with Mark Badger and Alex Wald on art—created a cynical, sexy, and visually explosive world that redefined what a creator-owned comic could be. A landmark series for its mature themes, dense storytelling, and groundbreaking use of computer-generated lettering, it remains a touchstone of 1980s independent comics.
