About the series
In the mid-1980s, Alan Moore—writing under the pseudonym Jill de Ray—turned his satirical eye to the funny pages with Maxwell the Magic Cat, a four-issue series from Acme Press. Co-created with Moore (also credited as de Ray on art), the strip follows a cynical, scheming feline whose adventures lampoon both the conventions of newspaper comic animals and the social absurdities of Thatcher-era Britain. A sharp, often overlooked detour from Moore's more famous work, it showcases his early versatility and his willingness to subvert even the most innocent of genres.
