About the series
From 1978 to 1979, Hassle Free Press published Adventures of Fat Freddy's Cat, a five-issue spin-off spotlighting the perpetually put-upon feline from Gilbert Shelton's The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Written and drawn entirely by Shelton, the series follows the cat's independent, often surreal exploits as it navigates a world of food, chaos, and narrow escapes from its oblivious owner. While the Freak Brothers themselves remain off-panel, their chaotic influence lingers, making this a compact, character-driven detour through Shelton's irreverent underground comix universe. A cult favorite, it captures the sly, deadpan humor that defined Shelton's work at the peak of the 1970s counterculture.
