A traitor named Grant sabotages a train carrying Sir Hugh Bailey, forcing the car into a tunnel where Jimmy Cong dons the Shadow's mask and intervenes. The Shadow shoots Grant's knife from his hand, causing the criminal to flee in panic. After the lights come on, Inspector Drummond and Sir Hugh realize they owe their lives to the Shadow's timely arrival. The story follows Sir Hugh and Inspector Drummond as they travel to Berlin on a special plane, with a vast spy network working to intercept and kill them en route, but the Shadow emerges from the darkness once again to save Sir Hugh's unarmed car from assassination, running out of ammunition in the process before vanishing into the night.
