A young man named Bob is taken on a tour of the meat-packing industry by his Uncle Jim and Mr. Jackson, learning about the journey of beef from the open range through processing, inspection, and distribution. The story traces the complete process from cattle ranching through slaughterhouse operations, quality control and laboratory research, to the refrigerated rail cars that transport meat across the country to markets and homes. Throughout the narrative, Bob discovers how Swift & Company's innovations in refrigeration and transportation have made it possible to supply fresh meat to distant consumers.
