# Synopsis A criminal gang led by Riggs robs settlers and plans to escape to the hills, but Hopalong Cassidy intervenes in a violent confrontation at a house. After Hopalong is knocked unconscious, the gang flees, and upon regaining consciousness he pursues them. The story culminates in a shootout where Hopalong apprehends the bandits, though Smiley becomes a complicating factor when he is mistaken for a gang member. The case is finally resolved at Carson Prairie's Mount Inn, where the sheriff and Hopalong verify Smiley's alibi and confirm the true criminal's identity through a painting that exposes the real culprit.
