The Evolution of the Cowboy Hat
6 pp

Old Ranny settles in to tell young Buttons the fascinating history of how the cowboy hat came to be, tracing its evolution from the impractical beaver fur hats that early settlers brought west, through a city hat maker's attempts to design something suitable for ranch life, to the eventual triumph of the wide-brimmed, high-crowned "ten gallon" hat that proved perfect for everything from shading the sun to watering horses. Along the way, Ranny spins tales of the feuds that erupted when felt hats threatened the beaver trappers' livelihood, and recounts some of the colorful variations and uses cowboys found for their headgear out on the range.
