School Friend #148 is an anthology publication featuring three stories. "Pam's First Term at Mountain School" follows Pam Robins as she investigates a mystery involving a model ice-rink and a skating figure, discovering that a moving magnet under the rink causes the fairy figure to skate, and uncovering a secret message traced on the ice by the skating figure that reads "Beware." The featured "Romantic Picture-Story" is "Lorna of Falcon's Nest," in which Lorna discovers an ancient book belonging to a cottage on an island and becomes involved in a mysterious adventure involving a smuggler and a damaged boat. "Ken & Joyce and the Ghost Elephant" by Hazel Armitage tells of young naturalists Ken and Joyce meeting with Dwara to locate Ghola, a legendary white ghost elephant, using a map provided by a mapmaker they befriend. "Jo of Hawthorn Stables" by Enid Boyten depicts Jo's struggle to save her family's stables from closure, as she owes a hundred and fifty pounds and faces mounting financial difficulties.
