A woman named Ella becomes involved with Joel, a man who claims to love her, but leaves her for New York City. After landing a job as secretary to the buyer for a large department store, Ella works hard and catches the eye of her boss, Clint Lomax, a tennis champion who becomes infatuated with her despite his mocking manner. When Clint hits a tennis ball that strikes Ella in the head during a match, he takes her to a club where he confesses his feelings, but Ella rejects his advances and he drives her home. In a separate political storyline, a woman named Marcia becomes entangled with crooked politician Hammond through her father's involvement, discovering evidence of graft that Hammond wants suppressed, leading to conflict with her political mentor McCracken and ultimately creating turmoil in her home life.
