The opening story, "The Case of the Woman with Interests," follows a Peter Wheat bread deliveryman who is confused when Mrs. Blake expresses dissatisfaction with his service, claiming she belongs to many clubs and doesn't want things left at her door. The deliveryman learns that Peter Wheat's sales approach differs from Mrs. George's, as Peter Wheat men specialize in bread and cater their service to customers' bread needs specifically. The main feature, "The Adventures of Peter Wheat," depicts Peter and his companions chasing Humpty Dumpty to Goosey Gander's home after Humpty destroys a pie; the story culminates in the nursery rhyme scene of Jack and Jill fetching water, which causes Jack to fall and break his crown.
