Two boys learn about the history of rockets and missiles through a television program featuring Dr. Harris, a General Electric scientist involved in the U.S. missile program. Dr. Harris explains the evolution of rocketry from ancient Chinese gunpowder weapons and Roman ballistae through World War II developments, culminating in modern guided missile technology. The boys are then invited to visit General Electric facilities across the country, where they witness scientists and engineers working on various aspects of missile development, including solid propellant cases, liquid rocket engines, and electronic components used in space exploration, such as the transmitting tube carried aboard Pioneer III.
