"Just Cash," a story set in Reading, Massachusetts, follows police investigation into a killer and burglar who operated on weekends, stealing only cash while ignoring valuable jewelry and silver. After weeks of investigation beginning in September 1952, police identify Ed Lavette, a 26-year-old ex-convict with a gambling habit, as the culprit through criminal records and surveillance, eventually discovering cheap costume jewelry he had stolen from victims' homes. Lavette confesses and is sentenced to prison for life.
