John Wayne joins the Marines and becomes pinned down by enemy machine gun fire during combat. After a grueling night of battle, Wayne and his fellow soldiers attempt to knock out the machine gun emplacement. The next day, Wayne is captured by the enemy and tortured by a man named Tantalus, who uses the ancient Greek method of torture—forcing Wayne to reach for food and water he cannot obtain. Wayne manages to escape by swimming away despite his bound hands and legs, ultimately defeating his captor and surviving the ordeal.
