A young boy and a farmer named Mr. Burley witness a severe storm that causes erosion and flooding on Burley's pasture, destroying topsoil and damaging his land. Conservation forester Tom Johnson explains to Mr. Burley how forest management—including ground cover, brush, and litter to protect soil—allows rain to be absorbed properly rather than causing destructive runoff. Johnson educates Burley about the commercial value of Southern forest lands, noting that the pulp and paper industry purchases over $250 million of pulpwood annually from private landowners, and advises him to manage his remaining woods properly to protect his land while growing a profitable timber crop.
