A reporter embedded with combat troops in Korea encounters a young, nervous soldier being sent into battle and attempts to interview him for a story. When the reporter declines the assignment, a seasoned Colonel instead assigns him to accompany a platoon, where he witnesses the soldiers' camaraderie and struggle, including tensions with a newly commissioned second lieutenant whose inexperience puts the men at risk. The story explores themes of youth, duty, and the friction between veteran soldiers and inexperienced officers in wartime conditions.
