An American boy named Tommy and an adult named Uncle Matt travel throughout Turkey, visiting modern cities like Ankara where they observe the Turkish National Assembly at work, and learning about the country's government, democratic traditions, and NATO membership. Their journey takes them to historical sites including the tomb and temple of Antiochus, fishing communities on the Black Sea, agricultural regions producing hazelnuts, tobacco, sugar beets, and potatoes, and craftsmen creating renowned ceramics in Kutahya. Along the way, they also learn about Turkish legends, including the tale of St. Nicholas who originated in the town of Demre and performed generous acts that became the basis for the modern Santa Claus legend.
