Kund Hochwald har spärrat in döden, vilket ger alla evigt liv. Detta ger stora problem då kroppar ändå förfaller och stora zombiegäng drar runt. Därför har Valsverken byggts, där bödlar "dödar" kroppar och absorberar själar. Alla vill inte till Valsverken, vilket gör att zombiejägaren Seldnör, har att göra. Två speciella barn, Zorn och Dirna, lever med Mäster Erken, som lär dem att tygla sin kraft att få själar att dö. Barnen kommer vilse och skaffar sig en fiende i zigenarhövdingen Geuner. Zorn och Dina hamnar i Valsverken men räddas av en bödel som förkunnar att han är deras mamma.
