"Love Tames the Tiger" follows Jim Blaine, a man hired to train jungle beasts, who falls in love with Zara, a beautiful woman who teaches him that love is more important than his dangerous work with animals—until a deadly tiger attack threatens to separate them. In a separate story, a sailor falls in love with Ann, a mermaid he encounters on a ship, but she ultimately vanishes into the sea, leaving him to wonder if she was real. A third narrative centers on Tom and Liz, who meet when Liz's mother warns her against a pilot, but they develop a romance during spring outings together until Tom must leave for military duty, asking Liz to wear his school ring until his return.
