Youthful Romances #10
In "Mel Torme DRx of Love," a 1952 Pix-Parade gem, Cindy’s world shifts when her mother’s transfer lands her in the rough Creek neighborhood and a new school. Drawn to Duke, the gang leader, she’s stunned when her loyalty is tested by a violent rumble—and a shocking accident involving her friend Alice. With heartfelt storytelling and expressive art by Manny Stallman, this issue captures the raw tension of teenage choices and the quiet courage it takes to walk away. The cover by Harry Harrison perfectly frames the story’s emotional stakes.

Cindy’s widowed mother is transferred to work in the lower-class “Creek” neighborhood and Cindy has to change schools as a result. Cindy dates Duke, the leader of a local school gang, but is shocked when she learns she’s expected to slip Duke weapons before a rumble. The brawl is “the most revolting picture” Cindy has ever seen, and her disabled friend Alice is accidentally shot by Duke. Cindy breaks away from the gang and goes back to her decent boyfriend Tom.
