"Cheap Kisses" follows Ken, who leaves his girlfriend Sally at her door one night believing he'll never see her again, only to be pursued by rival Judy who attempts to win him over. Ken rejects Judy's advances and later reunites with Sally, eventually marrying her at city hall. The story concludes with Ken and Sally having been together for a year in Wilston, where they work together and find happiness in their partnership. A secondary narrative reveals that Ken's wartime friend Mart, recently returned from Korea, encounters Joe Barnes—Ken's former rival—and learns that Joe has also married and settled into a business partnership, with both men discovering that their old jealousies and romantic conflicts have been resolved through commitment and work.
