Walter had made his fortune by his own efforts and on the evening he announced the engagements of his son and his daughter, he was proud of both of them. But the company secretary leaves that evening with envy in his heart because he had wanted Claire for himself and she had turned him down. He sets about to destroy the relationship between Walter and his children.
