After coming to New York, Charlie loses his money gambling, but writes to his daughter and tells her he was a big success. When he receives notification that she is coming to see him, his friends pretend to work for him to create a pretense of wealth. Meanwhile, Kitty is hiding her own secret. Instead of studying in London for the past three years, she had become a star on the London stage who had suddenly disappeared. A British reporter has followed her to New York to get her story.
