“Prologue”

"Prologue," a poignant story from *Yiddishkeit: Jewish Vernacular and the New Land* (2011), weaves together the voices of Sharon Rudahl, Peretz Hirshbein, and Edgar G. Ulmer in a quiet yet resonant tale of displacement and connection. Illustrated, inked, and colored by Sharon Rudahl, the story follows Levi, a wandering scholar who finds unexpected meaning in a village where learning is both a labor and a kind of prayer. As he teaches the boys and observes the rhythms of daily life, a moment of quiet revelation with a young woman named Dina shifts his path in ways that feel both inevitable and tender. The cover, by David Lasky, captures the story’s quiet gravity with a simple, evocative image.

Seeking a community of true Jews, Levi goes a-wandering. Recognizing him as an educated man, the villagers beg him to stay as a teacher. He teaches the boys to read as the girls make eyes at him and householders bicker over the honor of hosting him. He wants to move on, but decides that he has much to learn from people who coax everything they need from the earth. When he discovers that Dina has learned to read and write by surreptitiously watching his lessons, he decides to marry her and stay.
