Twelve year old Bobby Drake manifests spectacular mutant ice powers which he is forced to keep secret in his normal suburban life. When bullies threaten the girl he likes, Bobby attacks with his ice power, outing himself as a mutant. The police arrive at his house and arrest him but Cyclops breaks him out of jail and Professor X causes everyone (including his parents) to forget about his powers. Bobby is taken to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters as the second recruit to the X-Men.
