“Prelude to a Future Past”

In "Prelude to a Future Past," a pivotal moment in mutant history unfolds as the Brotherhood targets Senator Kelly, setting off a chain reaction that reshapes the X-Men’s future. With help from a future version of Kitty Pryde temporarily inhabiting her present body, the team confronts Mystique and her allies—only for the young mutant’s consciousness to return just as Kelly is rescued. A month later, in the wake of the attack, Senator Kelly appoints Gyrich to lead a covert Sentinel initiative known as "Project Wideawake." Written by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, with art by Byrne and inks by Terry Austin, this issue features a striking cover by Salvador Larroca.

The Brotherhood makes its play against Senator Kelly. Kitty's future self, which is in possession of her present body, helps the X-Men defeat Mystique and her crew (thus changing the future). As soon as Kelly is saved, Kitty's psyche returns from the future to her own body. A month later, in response to the attack, Kelly puts Gyrich in charge of a top secret Sentinel program called "Project Wideawake."
