First on-panel appearance of Hope Summers (later known as the 'Mutant Messiah'), created by writer Mike Carey and penciler Chris Bachalo.
The issue is chapter 5 of the 13-part 'Messiah Complex' crossover, which ran from October 2007 to January 2008 across X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, and New X-Men.
The issue reveals Cable as the surprise fourth party in possession of the mutant baby — a plot twist that recontextualized the entire preceding crossover and set Cable and Bishop on a years-long chase through time.
Although Hope first appeared here, she was not named until Cable (Vol. 2) #10; her birth was first mentioned in the Messiah Complex one-shot, and she was prophesied as far back as New X-Men (Vol. 2) #36.
The main cover was penciled by David Finch (inked by Danny Miki, colored by Jason Keith); a retailer-incentive variant cover was provided by J. Scott Campbell, and the issue also received a second printing.
The issue was collected in both the original X-Men: Messiah Complex trade paperback and hardcover (ISBN 9780785123200), and later reprinted in the X-Men Milestones: Messiah Complex edition.
The events of this issue directly triggered the launch of a new ongoing Cable series (writer Duane Swierczynski, artist Ariel Olivetti) and a new X-Force series after the crossover concluded, while X-Men (Vol. 2) was simultaneously rebranded as X-Men: Legacy beginning with issue #208.
