Todd Nauck conceived WildGuard while still attending art school, initially realizing the concept as a set of self-published ashcan mini-comics he produced around 1993 while circulating portfolio submissions to publishers. The original concept framed the team as a superhero analogue to the television program COPS, but by the time Nauck brought the project to Image Comics for mainstream publication in 2003, he had retooled the premise around the American Idol audition-and-elimination format, which was then at the peak of its cultural popularity. Nauck served as sole writer, penciler, and letterer on the series, with Lary Stucker — his longtime collaborator from nearly five years on DC's Young Justice — providing inks, making the book an unusually self-contained creative effort for a mainstream-distributed title.
