About this Issue

WildC.A.T.s Sourcebook #2 is the concluding volume of the only official reference-guide series produced during WildStorm Productions' original Image era, documenting the full roster of heroes, villains, allies, and locations established through Brandon Choi's tenure as series plotter (through WildC.A.T.s #13). Because the two-issue Sourcebook run was never collected for decades, this issue served as the primary printed reference for the expanding Wildstorm Universe at a pivotal moment — when the line's animated television series was debuting on CBS and a Playmates toy line was launching alongside it. The issue's breadth of character profiles, spanning core WildC.A.T.s members, Kherubim lords, Daemonite villains, and fringe Wildstorm characters, makes it a snapshot of the universe as Jim Lee and his collaborators envisioned it at its most commercially ambitious peak.

History

Published in November 1994 by WildStorm Productions under the Image Comics imprint, this second and final issue of the Sourcebook series was written by Ted Adams, Sarah Becker, Bill Kaplan, and Jeff Mariotte — a collaborative editorial and freelance writing team with deep roots in the WildStorm editorial office. Jim Lee served as executive editor, and the cover was produced by Joe Madureira, then emerging as one of the most in-demand artists of the mid-1990s. The issue assembled an unusually large artistic bench — including Jae Lee, Paul Pelletier, Jason Pearson, Terry Dodson, Gary Frank, Tony Harris, Kelley Jones, and Roger Cruz among others — each contributing profile illustrations in the handbook format popularized by Marvel's Official Handbook series. The Sourcebook format bridged a transitional period: Jim Lee was winding down his penciling duties on the main title and the WildStorm Universe was rapidly expanding into interconnected miniseries, making a comprehensive character bible both editorially useful and commercially appealing to the era's collector market.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published November 1994 by WildStorm Productions / Image Comics; cover date aligns with the launch of the WildC.A.T.s CBS animated series and Playmates toy line.
  • Written by Ted Adams, Sarah Becker, Bill Kaplan, and Jeff Mariotte, with Jim Lee serving as executive editor.
  • Cover art by Joe Madureira; interior profile art by a large rotating team including Jae Lee, Paul Pelletier, Jason Pearson, Terry Dodson, Gary Frank, Tony Harris, Kelley Jones, Roger Cruz, Ryan Benjamin, and others.
  • Functions as a handbook-style reference guide profiling heroes, villains, supporting characters, locations, and items from the WildC.A.T.s-related titles — the second and final issue of that specific series.
  • Character coverage includes the full classic WildC.A.T.s roster (Grifter/Cole Cash, Zealot/Zannah, Voodoo/Priscilla Kitaen, Warblade/Reno Bryce, Maul/Jeremy Stone, Spartan/Hadrian, Void/Adrianna Tereshkova, Lord Emp/Jacob Marlowe) as well as key villains and supporting cast including Lord Entropy, Lord Defile, Bloodmoon, Cyberjack, Mister Majestic/Lord Majestros, Savant, Soldier, Tapestry, and Soma.
  • The profiles cover the universe's lore through the end of Brandon Choi's plotting run on the main WildC.A.T.s series (issues #1–13), making it a self-contained reference that does not spoil events from the James Robinson or Alan Moore eras that followed.
  • The Daemonite Stealth-Suit is among the items catalogued, and Bloodmoon — whose civilian identity as former Team 7 agent Robert Diaz was a key revelation in The Kindred miniseries — appears as a catalogued villain.
  • Both Sourcebook issues (#1 and #2) were reprinted in collected form for the first time in DC's WildC.A.T.s Compendium One (2024), ending roughly three decades without a trade paperback home.
