Wild Bill Hickok tracks a pair of cattle rustlers across the frontier, only to uncover a far darker scheme: Chief Thick-Foot and his Cheyenne have been secretly fencing stolen livestock while posing as peaceful ranchers. When a cavalry patrol is ambushed at Dry Buttes by the renegade Comanche chieftain Black Cloud, Sergeant Trainor must lead the handful of survivors across deadly desert terrain toward Fort Macklin. Stranded with a stranded stagecoach carrying civilians—including the sharp-tongued Miss Lanning, whose brother outranks him—Trainor enforces iron discipline to keep everyone alive while Black Cloud's warriors dog their every move.
