The series launched in Summer 1944 under MLJ Magazines — the company founded by Maurice Coyne, Louis Silberkleit, and John L. Goldwater — with early Wilbur Wilkin stories drawn primarily by Bill Vigoda. By 1945, Bill Woggon had introduced the Katy Keene backup feature in issue #5, inspired by the wartime popularity of pin-up illustration and aimed squarely at the same teen readership that had made Archie Andrews a phenomenon. MLJ's rebranding to Archie Comics Publications in 1946 reflected just how thoroughly the Archie template had come to define the line, and Wilbur Comics #8 is the first issue on the stands to carry that new corporate identity on its cover.
