Wilbur endeavors to send a birthday telegram to his cousin Mary Ann by driving between multiple small towns to find an open telegraph office, facing various obstacles including running out of gas multiple times and closed offices. After an exhausting journey through Westfield, Ashland, Eastville, and Myrtville, he finally succeeds in sending the greeting from Myrtville's all-night telegraph office. In a comedic twist, Wilbur's friend Red reveals he had remembered later that evening that Mary Ann's birthday actually falls in June, making the urgent effort unnecessary. A second story features Wilbur discovering a chemical formula that he and Red attempt to use for making money, leading them through various comedic misadventures including attempts to purchase ingredients from a drugstore and an encounter with what they mistake for the formula's effects.
