The issue's cover teases that Captain Marvel will receive a first name, with a farmyard encounter between the hero and a man named Henry G. Marvel. Inside stories include "Adventures of R.C. and Quickie: Race with Death!" in which the characters pursue a runaway horse across the desert to intercept a jeep before it crashes; a tale involving a mad scientist who refuses to surrender an invention to either German or American forces, ultimately destroying his own creation and fleeing by train; and "Isis and Taia," in which characters pursue a magical Rod of Hermes that grants wishes, ultimately learning the artifact must be destroyed to prevent its misuse.
When an insurance salesman and two lawyers corner Captain Marvel with questions about his legal identity, the hero discovers he's never had a first name—and the problem becomes urgent when a fortune of one million dollars hinges on it. Captain Marvel sets out to find the real heir, an encounter that leads him to reconsider whether a proper name might suit him after all. Written and illustrated in the spirited style of Whiz Comics' golden-age adventure, this story finds humor and heart in the unlikely question of what to call a hero.
Golden Arrow grows suspicious when a supposedly charitable Indian school run by the seemingly benevolent Elias Cockburn begins to show signs of deception, particularly after a young boy named Little Feather tries to expose the truth. As Golden Arrow investigates the school and its shabby conditions, he must uncover what's really happening in this "two faced town" before the swindler can silence everyone who knows the truth.
When a brilliant inventor hides the blueprints to a vital warplane control device and leaves only a cryptic riddle as a clue, Spy Smasher finds himself racing against the Nazi spy Von Seilig to solve the mystery first. With the course of the war hanging in the balance, our hero must use both his wits and his fists to stay one step ahead of his cunning enemy and claim the prize before the Axis does.
When Ibis and Taia stumble upon an auction featuring the legendary Rod of Hermes, they discover it's about to fall into the wrong hands—an ordinary person with no idea of the relic's terrifying power. With Ibis separated from his protective Ibistick and Taia held captive by criminals, the Rod's new owner begins granting his own wishes, unleashing chaos and corruption across the city. Ibis must find a way to reclaim control before the Rod's wielder becomes too powerful to stop.
