About this Collection

When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #1 marks the comics debut of critically acclaimed horror novelist Gus Moreno, whose prose work This Thing Between Us earned NPR's 'Best Book of 2021' distinction — making this a rare and genuinely cross-medium debut that brought a literary horror voice directly into the pamphlet format. The series represents BOOM! Studios' continued investment in prestige horror original IP, sitting alongside landmark titles like Something is Killing the Children in the publisher's growing horror library. By fusing the police-procedural genre with South American religious horror and demonic exorcism mythology, Moreno and artist Jakub Rebelka pushed the exorcism sub-genre in a direction that is both character-driven and structurally indebted to crime fiction — a creative hybrid unusual in mainstream comics. The five-issue limited series also received a collected Spanish-language edition published by Astiberri in 2026, demonstrating an early international footprint for an all-original BOOM! property.

History

Moreno conceived the series as a deliberate attempt to revitalize the exorcism genre, drawing on inspirations including True Detective, Se7en, Training Day, and the Argentine horror film When Evil Lurks, channeling them into a five-part limited series structure. His editor Ramiro Portnoy shepherded Moreno's transition from prose to script form, and Moreno has credited screenwriter Clay McLeod Chapman with generously helping him adapt his storytelling instincts to the comics page. Rebelka — a Polish illustrator and painter with prior BOOM! Studios credits including Judas and Origins — handled both pencils and colors, giving the book an unusually unified visual identity under a single visual artist. Issue #1 was scheduled to hit shelves on January 1, 2025, as a deliberate New Year's Day launch.
