About this Issue

West Coast Avengers #8 (Vol. 4, 2025) represents the dramatic payoff of Gerry Duggan's long-simmering 'War of Ultron' arc, the issue in which the consequences of Iron Man's controversial decision to recruit a reformed Ultron onto an Avengers roster finally arrive in full force — with the Scorched Ultron overloading Wonder Man's ionic energy systems and pushing the team to the brink. The issue is also notable for advancing a dual-threat structure that sets the stage for the series finale: while the Church of Ultron erupts into open conflict, Flag-Smasher's prison scheming against Blue Bolt introduces a politically-charged second front that rewires the back half of Vol. 4. As the penultimate act of a ten-issue run built around superhero rehabilitation and the ethics of trusting irredeemable villains, it crystallizes the thematic argument the entire volume has been making about accountability and institutional arrogance.

History

Volume 4 of West Coast Avengers was announced in September 2024 and launched in November of that year, growing directly out of Gerry Duggan's preceding run on Invincible Iron Man — the idea of Iron Man and War Machine standing up a villain-rehabilitation team on the West Coast was seeded in the final issue of that Iron Man series. Duggan brought artist Danny Kim, colorist Arthur Hesli, and letterer VC Joe Caramagna along for the new book, with Alanna Smith editing under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. Issue #8 falls in the second story arc (trade-collected as 'War of Ultron') and was released on June 18, 2025, with a cover-date of August 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published by Marvel Comics; released June 18, 2025 (cover-dated August 2025); part of West Coast Avengers Vol. 4 (2024–2025), the fourth volume in the franchise's history.
  • Written by Gerry Duggan; interior art and inks by Danny Kim; colors by Arthur Hesli; letters by VC Joe Caramagna; cover by Ben Harvey; edited by Alanna Smith.
  • The issue is the climactic chapter of the 'War of Ultron' arc, in which the Scorched Ultron — a hostile, murderous iteration distinct from the Avengers' own reformed Ultron — destroys a rival faction and corrupts the Church of Ultron's cyborg disciples, triggering a full Avengers Red Alert.
  • Flag-Smasher's B-plot is fully activated in this issue: imprisoned in California's penal system, he coerces Blue Bolt (Killerwatt) into uploading a virus to the Avengers' computer infrastructure by threatening his father's life.
  • Avenger Ultron overloads Wonder Man's ionic energy in combat, transforming him into an uncontrolled weapon — the direct consequence of Tony Stark's controversial decision to place Ultron on the team, a tension established since issue #1.
  • The series' Vol. 4 roster — assembled by Iron Man and War Machine — includes Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Firestar (Angelica Jones), Blue Bolt, and a reformed Ultron; Firestar is absent from this issue's action, still in rehabilitation for alcoholism.
  • Blue Bolt (first appearance: West Coast Avengers Vol. 4 #1, November 2024) is a lightning-powered former henchman placed on the team via a prison release program; he is a new character created by Gerry Duggan and Danny Kim for this series.
  • Three variant covers were published alongside the standard Ben Harvey cover: a Federico Vicentini 'Fantastic!' variant and a Godtail variant; the series concluded with issue #10.
