About this Issue

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #2 is the second chapter of the first ongoing Jack Russell solo series designed from the ground up under Marvel's newly minted Red Band publishing format — a label that, when introduced with Blood Hunt in 2024, marked the first time Marvel produced a more graphically explicit alternate edition of a mainstream Marvel Universe title, distinct from prior adult imprints like MAX or Epic. The issue continues the post-Blood Hunt arc that strips Jack Russell of the lycanthropic self-control he had painstakingly built over five decades of publication history, resetting him as a fugitive suspect in a massacre he cannot remember committing — a narrative engine that reconnects the character to the primal horror roots of his 1972 debut. By folding in the Midnight Mission and Moon Knight's supporting network (Mr. Knight, Reese Williams, and Khonshu), the series deliberately bridges Marvel's horror corner with its street-level mystic landscape, treating the werewolf genre with an explicit-content seriousness rarely afforded to the character in the modern era.

History

Writer Jason Loo developed the series directly out of his Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt one-shot, with Marvel editorial (editor Devin Lewis, editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski) greenlighting an ongoing that would live entirely within the Red Band format rather than producing a tamer parallel edition. Loo has described the creative atmosphere as one in which his editors actively encouraged escalating violence, with penciler Sergio Dávila (a veteran of Thor and Venom) and inker JP Mayer providing the anatomical detail needed to make that gore land on the page. The series launched August 14, 2024, with issue #2 following on September 25, 2024; both issues were polybagged with a Parental Advisory banner, a packaging choice that echoed the polybag gimmicks of the 1990s while serving a genuinely functional content-warning purpose under the new Red Band banner.
