About this Issue

This one-shot served as the narrative bridge that deliberately darkened the trajectory of Jake Gomez, the second Werewolf by Night, pushing him toward a more brutal, uncontrolled form of lycanthropy as a direct consequence of the vampire apocalypse sweeping the Marvel Universe during Blood Hunt. The issue is also notable as a publishing landmark: it was produced and distributed as a Red Band edition — Marvel's experiment with polybagged, Parental Advisory-rated comics containing content too graphic for standard newsstand-style releases, a format debuted on the Blood Hunt event itself. By inflicting a new, rage-fueled transformation on Jake Gomez that left him in voluntary exile, the story laid the specific emotional and physical groundwork that writer Jason Loo then carried forward into Jack Russell's subsequent Red Band solo ongoing series, making the one-shot a genuine story-engine rather than a disposable tie-in.

History

Marvel announced the issue in February 2024 as part of the sprawling tie-in program surrounding Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz's Blood Hunt — a five-issue limited series teased at New York Comic Con in October 2023 that staged a global vampire uprising blocking out the sun via Darkforce energy. Writer Jason Loo, who had been developing Jake Gomez's corner of the Marvel Universe, was paired with artist Adam Gorham to deliver what Loo himself described as a 'teen-horror Grindhouse feature' — a deliberately pulpy, visceral tone that fit Marvel's new Red Band publishing initiative, which introduced polybagged editions with additional graphic content as a format innovation for the Blood Hunt event. The issue was edited by Devin Lewis and Lauren Amaro under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, and Loo's work on this one-shot directly led to his assignment on the subsequent Jack Russell–starring Werewolf by Night Red Band ongoing series drawn by Sergio Dávila.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published July 3, 2024 (cover-dated September 2024); written by Jason Loo with interior art by Adam Gorham and cover art by Davide Paratore.
  • Produced and distributed as a Red Band edition — polybagged with a Parental Advisory rating — as part of Marvel's new mature-content publishing initiative introduced during the Blood Hunt event.
  • Tie-in to the Blood Hunt crossover event (written by Jed MacKay, art by Pepe Larraz), in which vampire factions united to block out the sun and overrun the Marvel Universe.
  • Stars Jake Gomez, the second Werewolf by Night, not the original character Jack Russell — a distinction that generated reader discussion about the issue's place in the Werewolf by Night legacy.
  • Story title: 'Terror in Dino Park.' Jake faces the returned spirit of villain Roulette (Duke 'Dude' Jensen) possessing his nephew Trevor, alongside a trio of vampiric police officers, at the Wild Dino Adventure Park in the Arizona desert.
  • First appearances of supporting/antagonist characters Sam, Dean, and Cody — all of whom die within the issue, underlining its unusually bleak, no-survivors tone among Blood Hunt tie-ins.
  • By the issue's end, Jake's lycanthropic transformation is permanently altered — fueled by uncontrollable rage rather than the moon cycle — leading him to choose voluntary exile, a character status that fed directly into the subsequent Werewolf by Night Red Band ongoing series.
  • The Marvel Database records at least four reprints of this issue, suggesting it circulated in collected Blood Hunt trade editions.
