Werewolf by Night #33 is the second-ever appearance of Marc Spector as Moon Knight, the direct continuation of the two-part origin arc that launched one of Marvel's most enduring anti-heroes. More than a simple follow-up, this issue delivers the pivotal moral turn that defines the character: Moon Knight — introduced in #32 as a cold mercenary working for the criminal Committee — hears Jack Russell insist that a werewolf is still a human being, which sparks his conscience and causes him to turn against his employers and free the captive. That ethical pivot, from hired monster-hunter to reluctant protector, convinced writer Doug Moench and editor Marv Wolfman that the character could sustain his own series, which eventually launched in 1980. The issue also marks the second appearance of Frenchie (Jean-Paul DuChamp), Moon Knight's helicopter pilot and long-running supporting character, cementing the core support structure that would carry through decades of Moon Knight comics.

History

The issue was written by Doug Moench with interior art by Don Perlin, inks by Howie Perlin, colors by George Roussos, and lettering by Debra James, under editor Len Wein — the same core team from #32. It carried a cover-date of September 1975 but was distributed on June 24, 1975, with a cover price of 25 cents. The cover was provided by Gil Kane and Klaus Janson, separate from the interior team. According to Don Perlin in an interview with TwoMorrows' Comic Book Artist, Marvel editorial specifically requested a new costumed character to help boost sales of the Werewolf by Night title, and Perlin designed Moon Knight's original costume himself; Moench built the lunar-mythological trappings around that design. The character's genesis was thus largely a commercial assignment that happened to produce one of Marvel's most psychologically complex figures.
