“Bridge Blast”

In "Bridge Blast," newly transferred army pilot McCallan joins the R.F.C.'s 42 Squadron, a group of gentleman flyers whose world clashes with his working-class background. On his first mission, he disobeys orders to engage the enemy, downing three aircraft but at the cost of the squadron’s seasoned Lt. Spicer. Back on the ground, tensions flare when he argues with Tyrell, who calls him a loner. The story, illustrated by Rezzonico in both pencils and inks, captures the raw friction of duty, class, and the weight of first combat in a 60-cent comic from 1976.
