"A Hero Too Late" tells the story of Tony Vickers, who becomes a war hero when he serves as a spotter for an attack that destroys an enemy nest and kills communist forces, though he harbors a personal grudge against the enemy. When American soldiers discover a captured American disguised as an enemy soldier, Vickers recognizes him as Jim Malone from his hometown and must decide whether to execute him as a traitor or show mercy. After a tense confrontation in which the prisoner begs for his life, Vickers ultimately allows Malone to escape rather than have him face execution, choosing conscience over vengeance despite the military consequences.
