War Machine #12 (2010) delivers a sharp, high-stakes twist in the ongoing conflict between Iron Man and Norman Osborn, with writer Greg Pak and artist Wellinton Alves crafting a tense narrative where the line between man and machine blurs. As Osborn believes he's won by framing the cybernetic Rhodes as a rogue Stark creation, the real Rhodes—his mind now inside the clone—reveals a meticulously orchestrated deception, turning Osborn’s victory into a humiliating defeat. The cover by Francesco Mattina captures the moment’s intensity, while the layered inks and bold colors from Scott Hanna, Walden Wong, Carlos Cuevas, Michael Bartolo, and Michael Kelleher heighten the story’s dramatic weight.

Osborn recaptures the Rhodes clone from Rhodes' people and arranges an attack on the International Criminal Court which kills War Machine. Osborn tells the media the cybernetic Rhodes was a rogue creation of Tony Stark's and that the clone was the real Rhodes. However, this has all gone according to Rhodes' plan; Rhodes' mind is already inside the clone and he and his team demonstrate how flawlessly they were able to play Osborn, then tell him his punishment is to know he's not as smart as he thought he was.
