A new lieutenant joins an Army unit and learns the importance of having strong tactics and weapons in combat when an experienced soldier lectures him that in war, like poker, you must have the cards or weapons to back up your moves or face defeat. When a red artillery barrage targets their position, Captain Beatty is ordered to take command of a reconnaissance mission across a pontoon bridge to the enemy bank, but the squad comes under heavy fire during their approach. After successfully completing their dangerous crossing and advance, the soldiers face intense enemy artillery bombardment that damages their equipment, forcing them to make a fighting retreat as they attempt to rejoin their unit at the main strongpoint.
