War Heroes #2 features the story "Hero of the Pacific," depicting President John F. Kennedy's experience commanding PT 109 during World War II. Two men found themselves adrift in gasoline-filled tanks after their vessel was rammed and sunk; the crew survived six days without food before reaching an island and swimming to safety. PT 157 rescued them on August 2, 1943, after which Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his courageous leadership and dedication to his men's survival. The issue also includes a separate combat story featuring a soldier named Ellson who must survive enemy fire and use tactical thinking to outwit a thousand Nazi soldiers attacking his town.

A Marine Dies

A Marine company pinned down by Japanese forces on Iwo Jima faces annihilation until their regimental commander, Colonel Gerhardt, takes matters into his own hands and charges the enemy blockhouse alone. As the narrator and his fellow Marines provide covering fire, they watch their veteran officer—a man who'd never seen combat before this day—make a desperate bid to neutralize the threat and save the company.

The Loner
4 pp · War

When the company digs in for a brutal, grinding war of attrition, PFC Rafe Ellson can't stomach waiting passively in his foxhole—the country boy and natural hunter keeps slipping behind enemy lines to do what he does best. His uncanny ability to predict enemy attacks and pick off key targets from deep in hostile territory earns him respect from his outfit, even if his methods baffle the brass. "The Loner" is a tense character study of a soldier who fights by instinct rather than orders, and whether the Army can—or should—try to rein him in.
