“The Zero Hour”

In "The Zero Hour," Lt. Todd and his paratroopers face a harrowing mission when their plane is hijacked by Bates, forcing Todd to wrest control and make a desperate landing in China—sacrificing himself in the process. As each member of the squad meets a grim end in succession, only Anson remains, delivering a quiet, defiant tribute to those who died. Bill La Cava’s stark, expressive art brings the tension and tragedy to life, while Sol Brodsky and Christopher Rule’s cover captures the grim urgency of the moment.

Lt. Todd's paratroopers have their plane hijacked by Bates. Todd recaptures it but has to keep it from crashing in China, consequently dying as he lands it. In succession, Plank is killed while trying to get his money; Billings uses a mirror to attract the Chinese, who shoot him; McCullogh tries to storm a tank and is cut down; Meeks gives his life to destroy the tank with a grenade. Only Anson survives to cheer Todd and Meeks and jeer McCullogh, Plank and Billings, who "were weak -- each in his way!"
