“Peril in Korea”

"Peril in Korea" in War Comics #1 (1950) delivers a tense, morally complex wartime tale from Gene Colan, whose art brings stark intensity to the POW camp drama. As Major Delaney endures brutal interrogation, his men—Joe and Tex—question his courage, only to witness a shocking twist when Sgt. Blayne breaks under pressure. The story’s emotional weight and unexpected turn are rendered with powerful clarity, all on a cover by Al Hartley.

Major Delaney's men are captured by the Japanese and placed in a POW camp. Joe and Tex think Sgt. Blayne is heroic but disdain Delaney, thinking he's a coward. Delaney is interrogated and tortured but doesn't give in. As soon as the Japanese threaten Blayne, Blayne loses his nerve and prepares to speak. Delaney steals a gun and kills Blayne to silence him, then is killed by the Japanese. Joe and Tex realize Delaney was the truly heroic one.
