“K-9!”

In the gripping wartime tale "K-9!", a soldier named Candy and his dog face a harrowing mission when his squad is pinned down behind enemy lines. With only one loyal comrade, Larsen, standing by him, Candy is sent to deliver a crucial message—only to be ambushed by Chinese forces, losing the packet in a desperate fight. The story, illustrated with stark realism by Al Hartley, captures the weight of duty and sacrifice, with a haunting cover by Russ Heath that mirrors the tension within.

Candy's squad has a love-hate relationship with him, with only Larsen constantly sticking up for his dog. When they're pinned down, they give Candy a message to deliver to their lines for a rescue, but en route Candy is attacked by the Chinese and shot. He kills one of his attackers, but the dying man tears the message packet off Candy's neck. Candy reaches the lines without the message and dies. The squad is finally rescued, convinced Candy failed them.
