About this Collection

Venom War is the culmination of Al Ewing's years-long run reshaping the entire symbiote mythos — the first Marvel crossover event to place Eddie Brock and his son Dylan Brock in direct, sustained conflict over the Venom symbiote's mantle, forcing readers to question which generation of host represents the character's future. The story marked a decisive closing chapter on the 'King in Black' era that began with Eddie's ascension to replace Knull, and its Panini UK edition brought this generational reckoning to British and international audiences who follow the publisher's collected reprint format. The event also meaningfully expanded the supporting cast of the Venomverse — Red Goblin, Agent Anti-Venom, and a symbiote-bonded Black Widow each play pivotal roles — cementing this corner of the Marvel Universe as a genuine ensemble franchise rather than a solo-character sandbox.

History

The US source material, Venom War (2024) #1–5, was written by Al Ewing with pencils by Iban Coello and launched in August 2024, closing out Ewing's long-running Venom tenure that had itself sprung from the King in Black event. Panini — which publishes Marvel's line in Germany, the UK, and several other territories — followed its standard crossover-collection practice by packaging the material into numbered issues for its local editions in 2025, with the German arm confirmed to have reprinted Venom War (2024) #1 in its own issue #1 and #2–3 in issue #2. The Panini UK product page additionally references material from Venomverse: Reborn (2024) #1–4, suggesting the British edition may bundle the crossover's content in a format that differs from the German numbering.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Venom War (2024) is a five-issue Marvel limited series written by Al Ewing with art by Iban Coello, launching in August 2024 — the Panini UK 2025 edition reprints this US source material.
  • The central conflict pits Eddie Brock (as the King in Black) against his son Dylan Brock (the current Venom host), each having seen dystopian visions of what the other's future as Venom would bring to the world.
  • Meridius — a far-future, villainous incarnation of Eddie Brock himself — serves as the event's chief antagonist, deploying Zombiotes (half-zombie, half-symbiote creatures) against New York City as part of his endgame.
  • Normie Osborn fights as Red Goblin on Dylan's side; he originally became Red Goblin when Dylan gave him the symbiote Rascal in Free Comic Book Day 2022: Spider-Man/Venom #1 by Ram V, Al Ewing, and Stefano Raffaele.
  • Flash Thompson (Agent Anti-Venom) fights on Eddie's side; during Venom War #4, Eddie asks Flash to relinquish the Anti-Venom symbiote so Eddie can use it against the Zombiote horde — a key character beat for Thompson.
  • Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), bonded to her symbiote Sliver, sides with Dylan's faction and is paired throughout the tie-in series Venom War: Venomous (3 issues, written by Erica Schultz, art by Luciano Vecchio) alongside Agent Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson).
  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man enters the conflict as a third contender for the Venom symbiote — the symbiote having sought him out as its first uncorrupted host — before one contender is eliminated by issue #3.
  • Kelly Thompson was nominated for the 2025 Eisner Award for Best Writer, in part for her work on the companion one-shot Venom War: It's Jeff #1, indicating the event's wider creative reach.
